How closely are you tracking to your plan? Are you on target… in the neighborhood but on the wrong street… or have you abandoned ship altogether?
How closely are you tracking to your plan? Are you on target… in the neighborhood but on the wrong street… or have you abandoned ship altogether?
But before delving into the details of establishing your “next steps”, let’s take a few minutes to remember why it’s important to have goals.
First, let’s start with a refresh on how to set a goal.
For more detailed information, visit our “resolution setting” blog here.
Step 1: Choose ONE life-changing goal. Achieving a life-changing goal typically requires you to modify a behavior or two. As you know, this isn’t always easy to do. So pick something that speaks to your heart… keep it as a single focus for your attention… and worry about the second goal later.
Step 2: Frame your goal using SMART logic. This is an acronym for – Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Relevant, and Time bound. When you frame your goal with these tenets, you have established a good foundation for success.

Step 3: Establish a contingency plan. Even your best efforts can’t keep life from taking the wheel sometimes. To keep life from derailing your plans, be sure to have a Plan B so you keep moving forward. It may not be the perfect plan, but it’s a forward moving one!

Step 4: Go for it! You have the plan… you have the back-ups… it’s time for you to take the leap and get started.
Step 5: Celebrate all wins! Changing behavior is not easy. Be sure you celebrate everything you do in support of your goal. Don’t wait for the big hurdles… it’s the little day-to-day stuff that makes or breaks success. You can do it!

★ If you had a few goals for this year, and you’re cruising on #1… now is a great time to start on #2.
To ensure you don’t derail progress by taking on too much… consider starting a goal that is complimentary and/or leverages the first goal. This “piggyback” action allows you to get “two bangs for your buck!”
★ If you’re working towards your goal but not getting the progress you want… it’s time to revisit the plan.
A great way to find the hiccups in your process, is to journal. Journal every aspect of your day. Journal your feelings and how you reacted to them. Journal your wins and missteps. Journal your disruptions and completions. The best timeframe is to journal for at least a week, but two weeks is better.
Once you have your evidence of disruption you can use this information to shape-shift your life and achieve your goal.

Once you have your evidence of disruption you can use this information to shape-shift your life and achieve your goal.
● First thing - eliminate all “do with outs”. This may take some time as some items on the list could include interactions with others. It’s okay to claim your time and explain your aspirations. If they care about you, these folks will support you all the way.
● Next - evaluate the “wants”. If you want it, how will you account for it? Can you space the events so your overall daily/weekly plan isn’t disrupted? Is there a hierarchy to the wants that can be used to prioritize?
It’s important to enjoy life and mostly likely the “wants” are those items that keep it real and happy. You can have the wants so long as it’s in moderation.
● Lastly - assess how you are prioritizing the “musts”. If these are activities that move your plan forward, are they given top priority? Are you spending time in this space when you have the most mental, physical and psychological health?
These are the bones of your goal - you will see a big difference when they take center stage in your life.
★ If you’ve abandoned ship altogether, it’s not too late to make an impact. Life is a journey… and as you go, you live, and you learn.
