A 6 step “how to” for Affirmations!
Growing up I’m sure you were read The Little Engine that Could, by Watty Piper. After the main engine ran out of coal, a little blue engine was asked to take all the toys and food to the children who lived in the mountain village.
She was small and had never been over the mountain. And since she didn’t wan’t to disappoint the children - she had to go for it!
“I think I can…”
“I think I can…”
“I think I can,” she said over and over until she reached the top of the mountain. She was victorious!
That lesson we learned as a youngster about the power of affirmations is never more important to bring forward than it is today.
While you don’t have a train of food and toys to deliver over the mountain - you do have hurdles in your life that need to be toppled. Friends, family and/or coworkers are counting on you.
More importantly - You are counting on YOU!

Affirmations are your own built-in cheering section to boost your confidence and belief in yourself. More so, when the negative self-talk starts to creep in, affirmations act as a barrier - stopping those thoughts cold in the street.
“Everything that happens to you is a product of your thoughts. So if you want to change your life, you must start by changing your thoughts.”

● Set in the present-day. Keep it current so your brain registers it as “right now”. For example – I am a good baker. Not - I will be a good baker, or I was a good baker. “I AM a good baker!”
● Specific and relevant. Unless it really speaks to you, avoid the cliché when building your affirmation. You want a positive statement that reflects you, your spirit and your agenda. For example - “Someone will help me when I am open to receiving help” versus “I am worthy”.
● Practical and true. Affirmations work best when they reflect how you really feel. “I love me just as I am” - do you though? Or is it better to say “I appreciate how hard my legs work get me from one place to another.”

It’s easy to make affirmations a part of your new mindset. Here are some tips to get started.
● Identify the focus. Are you learning a new skill? Gaining a new confidence? Desiring a healthier more “on the go” you? Figure out the one thing you desire and write it down.
You can have many areas of focus with affirmations - but in the beginning, it’s best to keep it simple with one.
● There’s no negativity in affirmations. It’s so easy to frame your desire in a way that shames you for how you are today. That’s not productive. Choose your words so they inspire you to take action.
For example - you want to be a better cook and make healthy meals from scratch. The family joke is “you know dinner’s ready when the fire alarm goes off”.
As such, your affirmation may look like this - “No matter what, my family gets excited for dinner.”
Here is where you are given some grace that you’re still learning and mishaps occur. And this helps to take the pressure off - it’s not perfection that counts here.
And at the same time, you’re stating the important point that your family is totally behind you, and they are proud of you too.

● Repeat daily. Habits are formed through repetition. Using affirmations to transform your life occurs because you have a daily routine for affirmations.
Allow yourself five minutes, twice a day. This is very similar to meditation. You want to focus very closely on your words as you say them. This focused approach will train your brain to believe it’s true.
State each affirmation about 10 times each. It’s not a race… Take the time you need to make these affirmations your reality.
