An empty tank will take you nowhere.
Our bodies require energy and upkeep to perform at an optimal level. When it comes down to it, we are high-tech machines.
Yet, we often push our minds and bodies to the breaking point or at a minimum, burn out.
Why, though? Wouldn’t you tell a friend to make herself a priority? It is not selfish to say you deserve the same self-care.
Have you ever seen a kid say, “I’m sorry,” but then change absolutely nothing? Turns out, we are a lot like kids when we say, “I know I need to work on self-care” but then we don’t make real changes.
It is time we actively put ourselves first!
If you weren’t taught what self-care looks like, don’t worry! We got you.
By making a handful of changes, we can morph the idea of self-care into a habit as natural as filling up our tank when the light flashes on the dashboard… even if we do try to squeak out those extra few miles.
And when we put focus on taking care of ourselves, we have more energy for those we love.
Self-care isn’t scary. It should make us feel good and cared for… kinda like that mug of hot chocolate on a snowy day.

1. Create a self-care routine
To make self-care a priority, we first need to make it a habit. Our bad habits are still habits. We just need to replace them with healthy ones.
Setting routines helps us develop healthy habits… like brushing our teeth.
Pick one routine and perfect that. Once it becomes a habit, add another. If you have trouble remembering, there are endless apps to help you on your journey.

For some people, a self-care routine may look like a skincare regimen. For others, meditating three times a day or simply drinking enough water can be the start of peace of mind.
Turns out mom was onto something when she said to start the day by making my bed…

2. Find your cheer squad
Supportive friends and family are invaluable during your self-care journey.
For whatever reason, some friends may have a hard time with your lifestyle change or even try to discourage your self-improvement in order to keep the relationship as it was.
This is the moment when we dust off our Sheryl Crow CD and belt out “A Change Will Do You Good.”

Supportive friends and family are invaluable during your self-care journey.
Find new circles (and friends) who are into self-improvement. Connect with like-minded people on the same mission!
When you surround yourself with support and people on the same path, self-care won’t feel like a novel idea or an obstacle to friendship.

3. Learn to say no
So many of us were trained to be helpful, kind, polite, agreeable, and consequently, to over-extend. Extending ourselves until frazzled and stressed does not do us or anyone around us good.

Identify your balance… and I am not talking about how many spinning plates can you juggle before they crash. I mean, what is the balance where you don’t feel like you are juggling at all?
First, commit to self-care as a priority and then add from there. Say no to what doesn’t fit.
You don’t need to pull out the 90’s “talk to the hand,” but you can politely decline. “I am sorry, Sally. I would love to chair the bake sale, but I cannot commit to that at this moment. Check in with me for the next one – I may have some more time then to help out.”
Remember, saying no isn’t bad. It means what you commit to, you do with your full energy.

4. Do something nice for yourself every day
Sometimes self-care is as simple as a cup of gourmet tea, sweet cream in morning coffee, a 15-minute walk during lunch, or swiping on your favorite mascara.
And you don’t need a reason to love on yourself. You are incredible.
Think about it. Likely you have lived through some real-life events.

We are all here having lived through a pandemic, teenage years, moves, adulting, and relationship changes… so BINGO. We all win. So, be kind to yourself every day. You deserve that.

5. Take a spa day
If you can get away to a place serving mint water and warm towels with fresh cucumbers for your eyes while allowing you to indulge in the aroma of ylang-ylang and lavender… do it. But, sometimes you have to bring the spa to you.
Set the mood. Light candles or dim lights for the perfect ambiance. Play light classical music and add natural, calming oils to your diffuser. Breathe in, hold, breath out. Ahhhhhhhh.

Now that you are relaxed, dip into a warm bath sans cell phone. If soaking isn’t for you, a steamy shower will suffice. Let the heat open your pores for you to wash and exfoliate.
Want the deluxe experience? Add a hair or face mask. Dry completely and moisturize your skin to lock in all the goodness. Glow, girl, glow!
End your DIY-Spa Day with tea or your own infused water. Rest and feel loved.

6. Create a soothing environment
Have you ever tried to start your car in the winter when your battery is a little low on juice? People are not a lot different. We have to work a lot harder to run in stressful environments.
Why do that to ourselves? Create an environment that breeds creativity and calm.
Look at the walls, bookshelves, and counters. Are they cluttered or bare? Are there organizational habits like pitching junk mail before walking into the house that could help?

What about installing a shelf for keys to prevent the franticness from misplacing them?
By changing a few things in your daily environment, you bring peace to your heart. And when you feel good, you do good.
People and cars have more in common than meets the eye. We need fuel, a compatible environment, people who care about us, to know our personal limits, and to create daily habits to best operate.
So, fill your tank. See how far you can go and uncover new beautiful sights. We know they will be extraordinary because you are in the driver’s seat.
